Cyber Threats - Ransomware

PROTECT YOUR DATA WITH URBANCOM IMMUTABILITY FOR YOUR DATA

What is Ransomware exactly?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that cyber criminals use to deny you access to your own data on your servers. The malware typically spreads throughout your network to servers and PC’s through phishing emails or an employee accessing an infected website.

Other forms of entry include social engineering, downloads of the malicious software from the web that can be direct from a site or by clicking on “malvertising,” fake ads that unleash the ransomware. The malware can also be spread through chat messages or even removable USB drives. Typically, the software gets introduced to your network by an executable file that may have been in a zip folder or disguised as a fax or other viable attachment. The download file then encrypts your data, adds an extension to your files and makes them inaccessible.

With Urbancom Cloud Veeam backup with we create Immutability for your files backed up to our cloud. This inoculates those files so they can’t be changed by any ransomware viruses protecting your data from attacks.

Who Is At Risk?

Anyone with a computer connected to the internet is at risk, and anti-malware programs may not protect users from the attacks. Billions are spent annually paying the ransom and recovering from the attacks. Not only are they cyber criminals but in come cases are believed to be supported by foreign governments.

How Ransomware Works

The digital extortionists encrypt the files on your system and add extensions to the attacked data and hold it “hostage” until the demanded ransom is paid.

After the initial infection, the ransomware may attempt to spread throughout your network to shared drives, servers, attached computers, and other accessible systems, including local backups. If the ransom demands are not met within the cyber crooks timeframe, the system or encrypted data remains unavailable, or your data may be deleted by the software, and the decryption key obliterated.

So to answer the question, “What is Ransomware?” Ransomware is a potential nightmare for unprepared IT administrators.

Because most businesses use a local backup to a USB drive or other attached storage those devices are susceptible to the attack by the ransomware. The use of the Urbancom Cloud Veeam Backup and Replication solution can protect your files from these ransomware attacks in several ways.

Urbancom Cloud Veeam Cloud Backup Immutability

When you backup your data to the Urbancom Cloud, these files are air-gapped from your local network. Air-gapping involves isolating a copy of your business’ data so that it’s not accessible via your network, the internet or any external connection. This creates a literal “gap” in between your backed up data and a copy of your backed up data.  Additionally, Veeam has added immutability to our cloud backups.  This immutability prevents the file from being changed in any way.  In fact this even protects your companies data from a malicious administrator or employee in the company from deleting a backup.  Only Urbancom staff are able to delete these files for you, and only on proper written direction from the customer’s President or CEO.
